Goblin Slayer has managed to push past it’s controversial reputation and get the green light for production! Based on Kumo Kagyu and Noboru Kannatsuki’s light novels of the same name, the novel features 11 volumes. White Fox will be returning to produce the anime set, in a dark fantasy world overrun by monsters. Goblin Slayer follows a young man who witnessed his sister murdered as a child by a horde of goblins. Going forward, he dedicates his life to hunting down and killing every last one of them. During his adventures, he finds a young priestess struggling for survival after the brutal murder of her team. He rescues her and she chooses to follow him along his quests. Eventually, Goblin Slayer is approached by a group consisting of High Elf Archer, a Dwarf Shaman and a Lizard Priest to take on a group of goblins led by much more intelligent Goblin Lords and Heroes. Volume one of the manga reached 39th place on the weekly Oricon manga rankings, selling over 20,000 copies in it’s first week.
Noted as one of the more controversial anime’s made, upon initial release it met with a ton of backlash. Literally the first half of the first episode shows goblins sexually assaulting a young adventure and brutally murdering a few others. Although it doesn’t actually show the details of these horrific acts, it holds no punches painting a picture through the sound of the victims. The graphic nature of the show earned it a ban and severe censorship in several countries. The first episode alone caused an immediate apology to be released by Crunchyroll. Although this did not seem to sway them to pull the show since it is available uncensored on the platform. The defense is the goblins portray such monstrous and evil acts initially to support what Goblin Slayer must do.
The backlash and dark intent of the show has not prevented a movie from emerging. Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown was released in 2020 with success. Both season one and the movie ultimately received enough positive feedback from those viewers who chose to stick around of the first episode. Overall, Goblin slayer is not a master piece, but is a pretty solid anime with a rich story line and history. Outside some of the darker scenes, the show does have many great qualities and light hearted moments. Personally, I did enjoy the show and look forward to season 2. Season two is expected to arrive by early next year on Crunchyroll and Funimation. Meanwhile, here is the official announcement trailer for season two! https://youtu.be/MgFgaE90bCE
